The Award (Travelling Librarian Award 2011)
Each year, the English-Speaking Union (ESU) and CILIP invite applications for the Travelling Librarian Award, from UK library and information professionals. The Travelling Librarian Award is intended to encourage US/UK contacts in the library world and the establishment of permanent links through a professional development study tour.

Eligibility
Applicants must be:
a) UK library and information professionals and;
b) in membership of CILIP at time of application.

Award details
The Award will be about £3000 to cover flights and some accommodation in the US. The successful candidate will be free to put together their own programme of visits (although help and advice will be available) and where possible will be encouraged to take up home hospitality with ESU Members. The successful candidate will be expected to cover further incidental costs. This study tour opportunity will be for two weeks in Autumn.

Criteria
A selection panel will judge all applications objectively on how well they further the aims and purposes of the award, and the evidence provided in support of this.

Each application will be judged on its individual merits.
There is no set application length expected. It is up to each candidate to write as little or as much as they wish. However, what you present in support of your application should be: a) relevant and b) sufficient, to allow the selection panel to make an informed decision.
Typically, each year there are many excellent applications. However, should there be no suitable application, the panel reserves the right not to make an award for that year.

A professional development opportunity
On return, the successful candidate will be expected to give some presentations and produce a short report. Usually a Travelling Librarian reception is held each year when the most recent winner has the opportunity to make a short presentation/talk on their study visit. Past recipients have found the study tour a rewarding personal and professional experience which has often helped advance their career.

The English-Speaking Union aims to strengthen international understanding through a variety of cultural and educational programmes and scholarships. As part of its international policy, CILIP aims to provide opportunities for members to enrich their professional lives by sharing experience and expertise with overseas colleagues.

When to apply
The English-Speaking Union (ESU) and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) invite applications for the Travelling Librarian Award, from qualified librarians working in UK libraries or information centres, from January each year. The closing date is usually at the end of March. The Travelling Librarian Award is an opportunity to do a study tour in the United States for two weeks.

How to apply
Candidates are invited to apply via email with a CV and a supporting letter to: library@esu.org.

The closing date is 28 March 2011 and the interview date is 12 April 2011.

All applications will be considered and a shortlist will be drawn up. All candidates will be contacted shortly after the application deadline and shortlisted candidates called to interview to discuss their application further in person.

Interviews are held at the English Speaking Union headquarters at Dartmouth House, 37 Charles Street, London W1J 5ED.

The conference aims to examine the way evidence-based is defined and from whose perspective. The event is free of charge for attendees drawn from NHS, university-related libraries and independent health libraries (a fee of £50 pounds will be charged to attendees from outside of the UK).

The conference runs from 11 to 4, with registration from 10.30. Places for the conference are limited to 60 participants. HLG is pleased to announce that it is extending the deadline for the applications for the 4 HLG Student Bursaries to attend the 2010 HLG Conference in Salford until 31st May. Each bursary has a value of approximately £300 and provides an opportunity for the librarians and information professionals of the future to attend a diverse range of presentations and meet professionals currently working in the field of health librarianship.

Applications are invited from part-time and full-time students currently studying a CILIP accredited course for a first degree or postgraduate qualification in library / information science in England, Wales or Scotland, including those graduating in 2010. Autoresponders basically send out a timed sequence of messages and, surprise surprise, are commonly used by people to automate their marketing on the internet. The basic technique is to drive potential customers to your website – offer something like a free report / email course which people can sign-up to, and when they do the autoresponder sends out the messages you want in a timed sequence. In this context it may take a lot of work to get a really good marketing message together that will lead to sales of whatever service / product you’re offering, but once it’s up and running there’s no further effort required.

In the context of libraries and information literacy there are a range of ways these could be used:

Enabling people to sign-up to an e-course. This could be a one-off thing, like an introductory video / podcast / whatever, or a sequence of activities over a period of time.
Prompting people to carry out certain activities as part of an ongoing course – you could set-up an autoresponder which you could set off at the beginning of the FILE course for example – or even before the course starts (the pre-course assessment could be the first message in the sequence). The emails could include things like a reminder of the deadline for the current component + a link to the page on the FILE website relating to the next session. The final emails could be asking people to complete their evaluation, possibly including a link to SurveyMonkey (or whatever) if it’s an online survey.

You’re really only limited by your imagination – but if you do have courses / events / whatever that take place over a fixed period of time, and you’re sending out the same information to a group of people in a timed sequence, this can be one way of reducing the administrative burden considerably.

One of the best known providers of an autoresponder is AWeber (http://www.aweber.com/), although there are plenty of others around too.

Leslie Morton Bursary

These bursaries are intended for HLG members who wish to attend an international conference in health librarianship, medical bibliography or medical history. A maximum of £1000 p.a. will be available. One award per year will be made. Applications will be evaluated once or twice a year, starting Jan 2010. Deadlines for receipt of applications are 31st January and, if no award is made at that point, also on 31st July.

Awards can be used for conference fees, travel costs and accommodation.
- The Bursary is open to Health Libraries Group members
- Preference is given to members with less than ten years experience in health library & information services
- Funding is available for attendance at international conferences in the area of health librarianship, medical bibliography or medical history. For example, ICML, MLA, EAHIL.
- Preference is given to those presenting a paper or poster at the conference
- The bursary is given to enhance the knowledge and development of health librarianship, medical bibliography and medical history, and to further continuing professional development. Applicants should explain how this particular conference is aligned with these interests of Leslie Morton’s.

Applicants will be required to write a report of the conference for publication in the HLG Newsletter. The Bursary can be used for conference registration fees, travel and accommodation costs. Up to £500 can be awarded for conferences in Europe; up to £1000 for conferences outside Europe.

Detailed guidelines for applicants are as follows:

1. The Leslie Morton Bursary is open to CILIP Health Libraries Group members.

2. Funding is available for attendance at an international conference in health librarianship, medical bibliography or medical history.

3. Applicants will be expected to give details of funding applications from other sources, whether successful or not.

4. Applicants will be expected to give a clear statement of the amount sought, broken down into conference fees, travel and accommodation and other expenses, which must be specified.

5. Applicants should confirm that their line manager has given approval for them to attend.

6. Preference is given to those presenting a paper or poster at the conference

7. Up to £500 can be awarded for conferences in Europe; up to £1000 for conferences outside Europe.

8. One award per year will be made. Applications will be evaluated once or twice a year, starting Jan 2010. Deadlines for receipt of applications are 31st January and, if no award is made at that point, also on 31st July.

9. A condition of being awarded funding is that a meeting report, conforming to the guidelines on the HLG website, is produced.

10. There is no application form. Applications should include a letter and CV and should be sent electronically to the Frank Norman, HLG Awards Co-ordinator. fnorman@nimr.mrc.ac.uk

11.The value of the award is at the discretion of the Committee, guided by the Leslie Morton Bursary Steering Group. The Committee’s decision is final and no correspondence can be entered into. The Committee reserves the right not to award the Bursary.

We are pleased to announce that the Summer issue 2009 of the Journal of Information Literacy has been published and is available at: http://ojs.lboro.ac.uk/ojs/index.php/JIL/index.

This is the first issue of JIL that hosts a collection of articles drawn entirely from the papers presented at the LILAC conference this year. The journal has also been restructured as explained in the editorial "Bridging the gap between theory, research and practice of information literacy" and includes two new features the IL projects and the Conference corner. The new structure is in line with JIL's aim of investigating the multifaceted nature of information literacy to address the interests of diverse IL communities of practice.

The NHS England Library Staff Development Group, London Health Libraries and the Consortium of Independent Health Information Libraries in London (CHILL) are pleased to announce the conference on ‘Sharing good practice in Evidence-Based Information Literacy (EBIL)’ which will take place on 17 September 2009 at the Wellcome Conference Centre. LIRG Research Award 2009

The LIRG research award is designed to promote research in library and information science. The aim of the award is to encourage and facilitate research by practitioners in the field.

The Library & Information Research Group (LIRG) welcomes proposals from all sectors of the profession, and particularly invites practitioners to apply, either as sole applicants, or in collaboration with academic or independent researchers.

Applications from academics in library and information science departments are also welcomed and proposals which are submitted in partnership with practitioners are particularly welcomed.

The award is worth £1000, and designed to support small scale research projects for which it may otherwise be difficult to find funding. The Award may be used to defray research expenses (e.g. travel, postage costs), to fund attendance at high level meetings or to fund a study tour. However, a clear overall aim for the research must be stated.

I found the workshop very valuable and I think it has given the project a real boost. Best things about the workshop:
- Excellent presentation/facilitation - your enthusiasm is very infectious Susie.
- The training has a very clear aim/outcome and we definitely need to create something as a result of it!

Things to improve - only one really and this one was already recognised during the session. The section on qualitative evaluation was a little rushed. It would have been nice to be able to absorb this at a more leisurely pace but you can't have everything.

Group 1 – Thesaurus searching

In Medline, run a thesaurus search on ‘bereavement’.

View the scope note, then hide it. Please comment about any difficulties or issues with doing this, or any other relevant observations.

Scope note cannot be hidden once it is displayed. Clicking Cancel removes the original search query. The possibility of using the browser’s Back button was suggested but the group did not actually try this out.

Select the term Bereavement, exploding it and choosing Major descriptor.
Now repeat the above search, but this time also select the term Aged, then deselect it BEFORE clicking Search. What happens? Can you find a solution to this?

Although the second term is deselected, the search engine still includes it, combining it with the first term using OR. No satisfactory solution was found other than re-running the first search and ensuring no mistakes are made when selecting thesaurus terms.

Group 2 – Thesaurus searching

In Medline, run a search on ‘eczema or atopic dermatitis’, mapping to thesaurus. What happens?

A message is returned saying ‘Unable to retrieve thesaurus’.

Can you suggest a way of getting round this problem?

Do each part of the search separately and combine steps using OR.

Any other comments?

Surprisingly little overlap between terms – surprised there weren’t more records in common. Not many thesaurus headings returned. Scope notes not good.

Group 3 – Using limits

In Medline, run a search on ‘eczema or atopic dermatitis’ in title and abstract.

Run a search on ‘corticosteroid*’ in title and abstract.

Combine the two searches with AND. Is it obvious how to do this?

Quite straightforward and intuitive. The only unexpected behaviour was the title and abstract field selection in the first search reverting to title only every time a new search was started.

As we discussed yesterday, here is the reference for an interesting article about the usefulness of Google Scholar.

Wilson, V. (2007) Evidence summary: a content analysis of Google Scholar: coverage varies by discipline and by database. Evidence based library and information practice 2(1), 134-136

I've scribbled a few notes on my copy on particular points I found relevant:

Variation by subject re inclusion as compared to standard databases in the field – medicine does quite well (76%) though some subjects are as low as 10% (humanities in particular)
Bias toward English-language publications
Approximate 15-week (four-month) delay in uploading new articles (compared to PubMed and BioMed)

The LHL Learner Support Programme Steering Group is pleased to announce the next six day FILE: Facilitating Information Literacy Education course. (See attached flyer for details). The course is validated by London Metropolitan University as a post-graduate module of 20 credits.

There are 12 places and they will be determined on a first come, first served basis. If the course is oversubscribed your explanation of why you would like to do the course will be taken into account before places are finally allocated.

Before talking to your manager about attending, please be aware that all applicants must be able to:

attend all six sessions
actively participate in a small group of 12 people
take part in a group presentation in session three, give an individual presentation in session five and deliver a short training session in session six

The management committee of the Feminist Library is calling an emergency meeting on Saturday 24th February 2007 to decide on whether to close the library for good. This meeting is a last ditch attempt to rally feminists to support our library and, if we are not able to come up with a solution, to discuss finding another suitable home for the collection. Those of you who have not been in touch for a while might like to know that the collection now also includes 75 boxes of material that was the Women's Health Library that we rescued from being thrown in a skip over the summer.

For a number of years the Feminist Library has existed in a state of permanent emergency, with a dwindling number of volunteers to take part in running the library, a precarious financial situation, uncertainty about its location, and a lack of womanpower to pursue crucial funding applications.

The current group of volunteers is no longer able to sustain the situation, and the library will be forced to close without an injection of new volunteers. Therefore the meeting will have a dual function: to decide on whether or not the library will continue to stay open, and to gather experience, advice and new volunteers to reinvigorate the management
committee, or help the committee find a suitable home for the collection if the decision is taken to close.

The meeting will take place at 11am at the Feminist Library on Saturday 24th February. There will be the opportunity to look around the library and to chat to us, followed by a more formal discussion. The library is wheelchair accessible. Please do let us know if you have any special access requirements.

Please distribute this invitation to attend as widely as possible. Feedback from the many feminist groups and individuals who have an interest in the library is very important to us, as well as the need to get extra help.

As a basis for discussion at the meeting, we are preparing a short document on the library's current plight and what our future options could be. If you would like to receive a copy before the meeting, or have other questions, or

In December 2007 the 'Health Information and Libraries Journal'

issue. In 2007 the title will be 'Assessing the impact of information
services in the health sector', and the issue will be edited by Rowena
Cullen, Associate Professor, Victoria University of Wellington, and Rachel
Esson, Medical Librarian, Wellington Medical School, in New Zealand..

HILJ is the official journal of the United Kingdom's Health Libraries
Group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

Prospective authors across the world are asked to submit a 150-250 word
abstract of their proposed paper to Rowena Cullen
(Rowena.Cullen@vuw.ac.nz) by Friday 2 February 2007. Papers (which should
be from 1000-5000 words in length) should be grounded in research, link
research to practice, and be of value to health information specialists in
assessing the value and impact of their own services and programmes.
Papers with an evidence-based focus will be especially welcome. Case
studies that can demonstrate the impact of services will also be
considered.

Authors chosen for the special issue will be asked to submit manuscripts
by 1 May 2007 for peer review. Authors will receive comments from
reviewers in early June, and will be asked to submit the final version of
their paper by 31 July 2007.

Theme: Accountability is present in many aspects of public services and
private industry. There is pressure to justify to all stakeholders that
the resources needed for an activity are appropriately used and result in
quality outputs that impact in some way on health services. Health library
and information services across the world cannot escape from these
pressures where proof has to be provided that their activities make a
difference. Clinical decision making, learning outcomes, outcomes of
education programmes in information literacy and evidence-based decision-
making, and the economic benefits of services are all areas upon which
health library and information services impact. Impact measurement thus
has a strategic role as it provides an opportunity for the library or
information service to show to the wider organization its contribution and
value. The challenge is to identify, gather and report the information
which shows the scale and level of this impact.

Different approaches are available to measure the value and impact of
health library and information services. These include determining
information needs and uses, bench marking, performance measures and
metrics, cost-benefit analysis and outcomes measurement. In all these
there is a need to understand the steps involved in planning the
evaluation, how the results of the assessment are best organized and
presented, and the strengths and limitations of the chosen approach.

For the purpose of this issue, information services are considered to
include standard library services supporting teaching and healthcare,
instructional programmes, services offered to health administrators,
clinical librarian programmes, services offered on a variety of technology
platforms including web-based services, community health and patient
information services.
